Managing Maternity Leave in Your Organisation - Our Personal Experience

Hi, I'm Rebecca Woolstencroft, the Managing Partner at MB+M Business Solutions.  I currently work on a part-time basis after having my first child, and I've just added a third day to my working week.  It's prompted me to think about my journey over the last couple of years in terms of what has worked and what hasn't.
I had a grand plan of how things would work, such as allocating clients to other team members, getting relevant information down on paper so others could follow it, working from home, and then of course working on a part-time basis.  All great in theory but I could never plan for the unforseen, like motherhood and all its challenges!
What did work for me was the following:
1.  Having a great team to support me and allowing them to work things out in my absence (effective delegation!)
2.  Having a supportive partnership/boss.
3.  Having a flexible approach by the organisation to working arrangements
4.  Sitting down and agreeing how the maternity leave/work arrangements will work for both sides
5.  Being prepared to ask for help when things aren't working

How has your workplace handled this issue?  What problems did you have and how did you overcome them?  Do you think flexible work arrangements can work?  Let me know your thoughts or feel free to ask me how I handled it.
